WAS BENJAMIN LIM ASKED HOW HE FELT ABT NOT GOING FOR THE SCH CAMP

Look at the sequence of events just before Benjamin Lim jumped to his death. At about 3.30pm on 26 Jan 2016, Benjamin reached home and after showering and lunch, he was still able to play games on his phone at the dining table.

Then at 4.13pm, his mother told him that he would not be allowed to attend the Secondary 3 school camp. Five minutes later, at 4.18pm, he could not be found in his room.

My question is: Did anyone find out how he felt about the 3-day school camp?

BENJAMIN LIM SUICIDE: SCHOOL AUTHORITY FIGURES ARE UNTRUSTED BY YOUNG PEOPLE

Investigation and arrest are inherently distressing for young people. It should be assumed that they are likely to be in distress whether or not their behaviour fits narrow-minded stereotypes about how dramatic distress should look. It should have been someone's job to specifically ask after his welfare, talk to him and proactively give him (and his family) support. Simply listing all the adults he spoke to and adding the words "They reassured him" does not address this gap in protocol.

WHY I DREAD WAKING UP EVERYDAY AS A SINGAPOREAN

This year, i've started feeling more helpless about living in this country, and the events of this week have really ramped it up for me. The death of a boy lures a politician-giant out into public to disparage the boy's final moments and shut down the dawning realisation that we are all endangered by agents of the law. A mother seeking justice for the loss of her son is told that the armed forces to which he was lost is immune from being tried in a court of law. She is made instead to pay for the legal costs of those from whom she seeks justice. In both cases, it is faith in public institutions, and not the protection of individuals, that is upheld by the law.

BENJAMIN LIM'S DAD: MY SON IS NOT A MOLESTER, I WILL SEEK JUSTICE FOR HIM

And ya, before I forget, the Ministers are saying that you molested a girl? They are saying you followed the girl to her block and went into the lift with her, and molested her? Now it rings a bell... I recalled you said there was this girl staying at neighboring block, you like her and that she is cute... Is she the one? You couldn't have molest her, we do not believe you will do such thing. The Ministers said there is CCTV recording in the lift... perhaps this CCTV recording can eventually help to clear your name. Daddy will seek justice for you. Let's us wait patiently for the CI, let us not speculate further...

GILBERT GOH: 5 PROTOCOL PROCEDURES THAT THE POLICE SHOULD REVIEW AFTER BENJAMIN LIM'S SUICIDE

Minors who are suspected of committing a crime in school must be handled by MSF or MOE and the parents to be kept informed of what's happening. They are too young to be subjected to our police style of interrogation. The current protocol of no adult-accompaniment must be over-hauled so our minors are protected and proper legal access accorded. Lawyers must be present - I was shocked that during any police interrogation no lawyers are allowed to be present. Stop all 4-man police harassment of individuals at MRT and other public places and stop issuing meaningless police warning to activists and dissidents.

BLAME GAME ASIDE, DO WE TRULY UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE COMMITED SUICIDE?

But in this blame game, besides harping on the procedures, who did what and who said what, we are losing a huge opportunity to have a nationwide discussion on why people commit suicide. What makes a person want to kill himself? Is life in Singapore really so bad? Those who have never contemplated suicide may not understand the turmoil and trauma that suicidal people experience. I want to change that.
