SAF looking into S$3b deal to upgrade F-16s

SINGAPORE: The Government is in discussions with the United States over a proposed US$2.43 billion (S$3.09 billion) deal to upgrade its ageing F-16 fighter jets, the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on Wednesday. Under the deal to upgrade 60 of Singapore's F-16 fighter jets, the aircraft will be equipped with, for example, Sensor Fuzed Weapons and Guided Bomb Units, as well as the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing Systems, which will project a display onto a pilot's helmet visor, allowing him to aim sensors and weapons at where he is looking.

Vatican facing UN showdown on sex abuse record

VATICAN CITY — The Vatican is gearing up for a bruising showdown over the global priest sex abuse scandal, forced to defend itself publicly for the first time against allegations it enabled the rape of thousands of children by protecting paedophile priests and its own reputation at the expense of victims. The Holy See tomorrow (Jan 16) will be grilled by a United Nations (UN) committee in Geneva on its implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which among other things calls for signatories to take all appropriate measures to protect children from harm and to put children’s interests above all else.

Infocomm Development Authority FT consultant jailed 10 months for underage sex

A former Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) information technology analyst was jailed for 10 months on Wednesday for underage sex.
Ramos Lobaton Alan, 26, pleaded guilty to two counts of having sex with a 15-year-old student in a room at a flat in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.

Five things to expect from the Public Transport Council announcement

The Public Transport Council (PTC) will announce its decision on fare adjustments for public transport on Thursday. Here's what you can expect from the announcement:

1. FARES TO RISE: Observers expect public fares to rise. The decision will combine the 2012 and 2013 annual fare adjustments with the maximum allowable increase at 6.6 per cent. Dog owners, beware! A dog was found dead, hanging from its leash, after its owner entered a lift without realising that the dog was still outside. I'm part of a lift rescue team and witnessed this tragic accident this morning (Jan 15) at about 6.30am. A dog owner was heading back to her flat at Bukit Batok Block 621 after walking her dog. She, however, entered the lift first while holding on to her dog's leash. The lift doors were closing but the dog still outside the lift at that time. It all happened very fast, and she had no time to react.
