The National Sleep Foundation (NSF), who issue national sleep guidelines in the United States (US), has recommended a set of sleep guidelines for different age groups.
Newborns between 0 - 3 months should sleep 14 to 17 hours a day, an slight decrease from the previous recommended range of 12 and 18 hours.
Teenagers on the other hand need some 8 to 10 hours of sleep a day, as compared to previous recommendations of 8.5 to 9.5.
Young adults and adults between 18 to 64 need an average 7 to 9 hours of sleep a day.
According to the NSF website, the new guidelines were put up after two years worth of research was conducted by 18 sleep scientists and researchers.
