The United States will appoint a special envoy to promote LGBT rights abroad.
Veteran diplomat Randy Berry was tasked to lead U.S efforts to fight violent and discrimination against LGBT persons overseas.
Berry will promote human rights for LGBT individuals. He is currently the consul-general in Netherlands and he had served in Bangladesh, Egypt, Uganda and South Africa.
United States Secretary of State John Kerry said "Defending and promoting the human rights of LGBT persons is at the core of our commitment to advancing human rights globally - the heart and conscience of our diplomacy". He cited overturning laws that criminalize same-sex activity in more than 75 countries as a priority.
Berry, an openly gay diplomat is married to his husband. They have two children.
