Boat captain Mr Shoo Chiau Huat has finally returned to Singapore after being detained in Indonesia for illegal fishing. He experienced jail, paying fines and "house arrest" before the court dismissed his illegal sailing charge in May.
Altogether, he spent close to 1.5 years away from home and is happy to be reunited with his family once more. He was all smiles when he met his daughter at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.
His wife was tireless in single-handedly caring for the family and rushing to meet-the-people's sessions to seek help for his case.
Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan also congratulated him on his return: "Delighted that Singaporean boat captain Shoo Chiau Huat is on his way back to Singapore after spending more than a year in detention in Indonesia. Glad that Shoo will be reunited with his family. Many thanks to our Embassy in Jakarta and Consulate in Batam for their persistent efforts on this case."
