After the Leaders' Retreat with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced this that Singapore's terminus for the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur High Speed Rail will be located at Jurong East.
Jurong East was chosen as it fits into Singapore's overall plans to transform the area into a second Central Business District
The High Speed Rail project, which was agreed upon in 2013, has been described by both leaders as a "game changer". It aims to cut down on travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to just 90 minutes. Now a flight from KL-Singapore takes about 45 minutes.
Due to the massive scale and complexity of this ambitious rail project, the initial 2020 target completion date would have to be reassessed. It was not stated when the new time frame would be announced.
Both Malaysia and Singapore are fully committed to the success of the high speed rail project and have achieved in-principle agreements in the areas of technical, operational, security and other aspects of the HSR.
