On 27 January 2014 at about 5.54am, ICA received a call via its Woodlands Checkpoint Operations Room from a male voice claiming that he is a Singaporean who stays in Malaysia and has to travel frequently into Singapore. The caller expressed his frustration over the traffic congestion at the Causeway over the past few days and he threatened to send a bomb to Woodlands Checkpoint before ending the telephone call.

Following the call, ICA alerted the Police. While security measures were stepped up, investigators from Jurong Police Division sprang into action to trace the anonymous caller. The officers conducted extensive enquiries and managed to establish the identity of the suspect. Their efforts paid off when he was detained on 28 January 2014 at about 7.40pm at Tuas Checkpoint and placed under arrest. Investigations revealed that the threat was not substantiated and the call was a hoax.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 30 January 2014 for an offence of a Breach of the Prohibition Against False Threats of Terrorist Acts under Regulation 8(1) of the United Nations (Anti Terrorism Measures) Regulations 2001 punishable under Sec 5(1) of the United Nations Act, Chapter 339. If convicted, he is liable to a fine not exceeding $100,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years or both.

Commander of Jurong Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Wilson Lim, commended his officers for their excellent investigative follow-up which resulted in the quick arrest of the suspect within 36 hours. He added, “We take all bomb threats seriously and will deal sternly with persons who perpetuate such acts of mischief”.
