A Singaporean woman was allegedly raped in her guesthouse while holidaying in Vietnam over the past weekend. The 30 year old woman, who was not named for obvious reasons, was holidaying with another female friend in Phan Thiet, a coastal city in Vietnam's southern province of Binh Thuan.
The woman was alleged to have been sexually assaulted by the manager of a guesthouse in the early hours of Monday morning while drunk in her room. She and her friend had checked into the guesthouse on Sunday afternoon, and was supposed to stay there for two nights. Reports indicated that the two women had asked the 26 year old Vietnamese manager, who also happens to be the son of the owner of the guesthouse, for recommendations on places to get fresh seafood for dinner. The trio then later left together for drinks and dinner that Sunday night. It was unclear what time they returned, but the rape allegedly took place at about 1am local time, when the man entered the room while the woman was drunk.
It was not known where the woman's friend was at the time of the alleged incident. The man has since been arrested by the Vietnamese police, but he insisted that the sex was consensual. The woman alleged that she was drunk, and was in no condition to give any form of consent. Police reports also indicate that the woman's body bore signs of sexual assault and evidence of a struggle.
The man is currently under police custody, while the woman and her friend had reached out to the Singapore authorities and has requested privacy.
