SELANGOR POLITICAL LEADERS AND MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TOOK A PAY-CUT

SHAH ALAM, Dec 1 — The Selangor legislative assembly today passed an enactment that will see the salaries of top state officials, including the mentri besar and his state executive council, slashed effective January 2015.

The motion for the enactment was proposed by Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali himself as part of a promise he made upon assuming public office back in September.

MB Azmin’s salary will be slashed from RM29,250 to RM 25,000, while the salaries of his state executive councillors will also be cut from RM20,250 to RM15,000.

The salary cuts will affect Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh and Deputy Speaker Shafie Ngah the most, as the former’s pay will be reduced from RM22,500 to RM15,000 while the latter’s will be RM10,000 instead of the previous RM15,750.

“This has been considered and has been agreed upon,” MB Azmin said moments before the state assembly passed the enactment.

The pay rise was introduced by Azmin’s predecessor Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and subsequently passed in the state assembly on November 22 last year.

Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, took over the reins to the Selangor administration in September from Khalid, who had held the post of mentri besar for more than six years from 2008.

Khalid’s administration has been long been criticised as “stingy” by his critics, especially those aligned to nemesis Azmin.
