The ruling PAP has announced that Punggol East MP Charles Chong has been incapacitated and will be on 2 months of medical leave as a result of a "planned medical procedure". The PAP added that doctors have advised Mr Chong to limit physical exertion and minimise contact with the public until he has fully recovered. The PAP did not disclose what is Mr Chong's medical condition and had not even told the public when he was admitted into the hospital.

Punggol East was narrowly won by the PAP in the 2015 General Elections when Mr Chong, a former MP for that region, managed to score an upset win over the WP incumbent Ms Lee Li Lian. The margin of victory was just over 1000 votes.

The PAP has announced that DPM Teo Chee Hean and his team will be standing in for Mr Chong during his Meet-The-People Sessions (MPS). Five MPs from neighbouring Pasir Ris Punggol GRC will also manage the municipal issues for Punggol East during this period as Punggol East is currently being managed by the PAP-run Pasir Ris-Punggol town council. The five Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MPs are also looking after Ms Sun Xueling's Punggol West ward since she is currently on maternity leave.
