MAN RECEIVES FIRST SUCCESSFUL PENIS TRANSPLANT

South Africa's Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital have performed the first successful penile transplant surgery on a 21 year-old man.

In December last year, doctors took 9 hours to transfer a donor organ to the young man, who had his penis amputated 3 years ago because of a botched circumcision.

"It's a massive breakthrough. We've proved that it can be done - we can give someone an organ that is just as good as the one he had," says Prof Frank Graewe, head of the Division of plastic reconstructive surgery at Stellenbosch.

There has been one earlier attempt at a penile transplant, but this is the only successful cae so far.

In their statement on success of the transplant, doctors said that penile amputation causes psychological trauma for amputees, a problem which they claim to be very acute in South Africa.
