Dear A.S.S. Editor
Good to read that the NUS, NTU and SMU are going to offer up more spots in their universities to students who fall short of the entry score for a degree course. They will be accepted based on their talents in various fields, including the arts and sports.
Good to know that even though Singapore places its values on grades, there are still avenues to get a place in our local universities if you are talented enough in your chosen field, such as the arts and sports. This will only encourage students that being creative and good in their other fields are also ways to get to that dream degree of theirs. After all, why should grades be the end all and be all for everything?
Unfortunately, not many carry the same sentiments. Just look at job offers all around you. If you want a job, better make sure you have that degree handy. So, grades still matter, but at least for some 2,240 students this year, the first step towards getting that degree is no longer dependent on just grades, but how well you do in the arts or sports.
