It seems that Lee Hsien Loong is very desperate to see that the TPP is passed by the US Government. In an interview with Time published today, he lambasted the US for appearing to backpedal on the deal.
In a pointed comment against Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton, he commented that the latter has said "a lot of things" that she would need to "un-speak" if she's elected to office.
During the interview, Lee's comments veered towards histrionics. According to him, if the US fails to pass the TPP:
"Your standing goes down with many countries around the world. Your opponents as well as your friends will say, “You talked about the strategic re-balance, you talked about developing your relationships. You can move aircraft carriers around. But what are the aircraft carriers in support of”?
One wonders what Lee has been reading - tying the US military presence here with the TPP.
The US has had military presence in Asia since the end of WWII and has been welcomed by a number of countries as a stabilising presence, particularly in the face of a resurgent China.
Does Lee think that without the TPP, the US has n grounds to stay in the US?
