Dr Tan Cheng Bock Calls For Independent Review Of Parti Liyani's Case

Progress Singapore Party founder Dr Tan Cheng Bock has joined in with the numerous calls for a review over Parti Liyani's aquittal. He notes Singaporeans were rightly delight that the foreign domestic worker found justice. He paid tribute to High Court judge Chan Seng Onn, Parti Liyani's lawyer Anil Balchandi and the HOME (Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics) team for their hard work in following through this case over 4 years on a pro bono basis.

While Dr Tan Cheng Bock commends these heroes for playing a role in Parti Liyani's acquittal, he lays out hard facts like how this case had dragged on since 2016. He said a similar case like this must be prevented.

Even though the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM) have promised to be accountable by holding a review, Dr Tan Cheng Bock wonders if the reviews are "independent enough to be 100% objective."

Dr Tan Cheng Bock counter-proposes that the government should create an independent review board to look into this case. The benefits of having an independent body will be its ability to uncover any "underlying systematic faults" instead of chasing after short-sighted targets like hunting for individual human errors and finding scapegoats.

By asking uncomfortable questions about the system and getting to the root cause of problems is what proper accountability looks like. Singaporeans deserve a efficient and unbiased criminal justice system.
