CONTRACTOR FINED $280,000 FOR FAILING SAFETY STANDARDS, CAUSED WORKER'S DEATH IN 2014

A contractor was fined $280,000 after one of its workers was crushed to death by a 1500kg metal gate back in 2014. The accident happened at a construction site at Bartley Rd. The worker was asked to check on the sliding of the gate when it toppled and pinned him to the ground.

Sterling Engineering had failed to ensure safety standards and did not bother to supervise its workers properly. MOM said "the weight and size of the gate leaf alone should have alerted the employer to the safety risks that its workers were being exposed to... A heavy fine was sought for this case to remind employers that they bear full responsibility for the safety of their workers throughout the work process".

Lowest bid again?
