CHINESE NEW YEAR GREETINGS FOR NON-CHINESE

Chinese New Year is here again. This means that almost all of Singapore is going to shut down and take a holiday for almost a whole week. Singaporean Chinese of all shapes and sizes literally will be out on the streets, decked out in their best red attires, going for their Chinese new year visitations.

Since it's almost impossible to not encounter a Singaporean Chinese in this country, it's also impossible to avoid that awkward moment where non-Chinese people like us fumble around for nice things to say to them during their new year. It's just like how the Chinese people automatically assume we would like to receive everything in green during Hari Raya, so we end up with a mountain of green-inspired gifts, such as green kueh kueh, green stationary, or green packets (more please) stuffed with green $5 notes.

Still, some of us do try to be nice and greet our Chinese neighbours and friends on this important festival. If you are like me and don't speak a word of Chinese, here is a list of 41 English greetings to say to the Chinese over the new year:

1. "Gong Hay Fat Choy." Translation: "Best wishes and Congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year."
2. "New year brings new fortune. Happy New Year!
3. "I wish you all the joy, peace, lοve, and luck. Happy Chinese Νew Year!"
4. "May the Year of the Sheep attract all the good wishes this year. Happy Chinese New Year!"
