64 year-old Muhammad Resat Ahmad had reached the end of his means in 2006 when he decided to turn to crime to pay for his wife's chemotherapy bills.
He ended up stealing earth cables from the ceiling of Golden Landmark Shopping Centre in 2006 to sell. He was found out only last year. The court eventually found Resat guilty of 2 counts of dishonest misappropriation of property yesterday.
He will receive his sentencing on 7 April 2017.
Mr Resat had been working as a technician for Golden Landmark for 23 years. Between February and April 2004, and between July and September 2006, he and a colleague cut the cable wires in the ceiling with a saw. They then slit open the cables’ insulation covering, removed the copper wires, and sold them at a metal-scrap shop.
The 2 men split the total of about S$6,000, equally between them.
Resat may face 3 to 4 months jail.
