Lawyer and politician Lim Tean recently defended two prominent persons, finance guru Leong Sze Hian and The Online Citizen Asia editor Terry Xu against Lee Hsien Loong. Both parties are facing separate defamation suits filed by the Singapore Prime Minister over the 38 Oxley Road saga.
In his Facebook post, Lim Tean shared how these defamation suits may have backfired against Lee Hsien Loong. Due to the high public interest, the state media was forced to cover this event instead of blanketing out the saga. The defamation suit also led to crucial evidence being brought to light in Court instead of letting things be glossed over in Parliament.
Additionally Terry Xu’s defamation suit was the first time “voluminous evidence” was tested in some detail publicly. When Lim Tean cross-examined Lee Hsien Loong, he was forced to reveal new aspects of the Oxley Road controversy.
Lee Kuan Yew’s personal lawyer, Kwa Kim Li was also compelled to publicly address her side of the story for the first time since this saga started. However, she withheld more details by claiming “legal privilege” to many of Lim Tean’s sharp questions.
Even though defending against Lee Hsien Loong’s defamation suits was a difficult task, Lim Tean was proud to represent both Leong Sze Hian and Terry Xu in two of Singapore’s biggest libel trials. Singaporeans should be honoured that fearless lawyers like Lim Tean are willing to stand up for what is right and just regardless of the circumstances.
