When Goh Chok Tong announced his retirement from politics, he introduced the 55 year old Dr Tan See Leng as his replacement. The 158th state media eagerly lapped up the story about Tan See Leng's 30-year long experience in the healthcare sector. They even went on to differentiate him from PAP's usual crop of elites (public servants, military generals and legal professionals) by praising how he had built his whole professional career in the private sector.
With the 158 media busy praising Tan See Leng's credentials, the public took interest in his rich working experience. Pictures allegedly showing his directorship in 69 companies started surfacing, leading many netizens to question if Tan See Leng is still able to look after the needs of residents in Marine Parade GRC.
As brewing speculations of his inability to serve Marine Parade became a concern, Tan See Leng was forced to clarify his directorships on Facebook. He shared that his position in 69 companies was a "wrong impression". Once he left IHH Healthcare Bhd as Group CEO, all his directorships of active companies related to the group also ceased at the end of 31 Dec 2019. Tan See Leng also declared his current directorships – paid position in Surbana Jurong, unpaid positions in raiSE (social enterprise), NUH Fund Limited, NUH Health Research Endowment Fund and unpaid adviser for Temasek Foundation.
GE2020 has shown that Singaporeans highly value integrity and honesty in their political candidates, especially those who claim to be clean and white. One thing seems certain, Singaporeans are now not afraid to scrutinise politicians and press them with hard questions.
