The Workers' Party (WP) Secretary-General Pritam Singh announced on 25 June that political veterans Low Thia Khiang, Chen Show Mao and Png Eng Huat will not be contesting in GE2020. This decision to step down was made "some time ago". However this decision to step down does not mean they are retiring from politics.
Pritam Singh shared that their collective decision to step down was based on three considerations to ensure the successful continuation of WP:
- The need to broaden the leadership base for WP to grow
- The three veterans will become "senior leaders" and mentor younger party members by being a resource of information and experience
- A WP MP must remain relevant to all Singaporeans by having a "pulse on Singapore society", or run the risk of becoming "too detached from new norms and the changing of society"
Besides this announcement on the three WP veterans, Pritam Singh shared that WP will be contesting in four GRCs and two SMCs in GE2020. The GRCs are Aljunied GRC, Marine Parade GRC, East Coast GRC and Sengkang GRC. As for SMCs, WP will be contesting Hougang and Punggol West.
Gerald Giam and Leon Perera will replace outgoing Low Thia Khiang and Chen Show Mao to contest in Aljunied GRC. Dennis Tan Lip Fong will be standing in Hougang SMC in place of Png Eng Huat.
