Track Fault At AMK Disrupts MRT North South Line, Train Disruptions Are back In Fashion

A track point fault at the Ang Mo Kio MRT station have delayed train services between Bishan and Yio Chu Kang towards the Jurong East station for two hours on Thursday morning. The familiar sight of delayed train and crowds waiting for trains to go to work are back, months after such scenes took a break from being common in Singapore.

According to SMRT, the fault occurred at about 7am, and train services from Bishan to Yio CHu Kang was delayed for about 10 mins. This delay, however, increased to 20 minutes by about 8:25am. SMRT took to providing bridging bus services for commuters between the Bishan station to Yishun station. The track fault was finally rectified by 8:50am.

Some commuters complained that the wait for a train was about 25 minutes, just to get into a crowded train. The fact that today was a hot day, and the platforms were crowded, with passengers all waiting to get on a train to work, made the situation just worse. Some were even worried that the Covid19 situation might be exacerbated because of the crowd waiting on a single platform.

SMRT have not commented on the latest track fault. The Transport Minister have also not spoken on how train breakdowns and crowds waiting for more than 5 minutes on a single platform might not be a good thing in light of the coronavirus situation.
