SDP Will Get Court Date In Their POFMA Challenge Against MOM

On a Facebook post by Chee Soon Juan, SDP’s leader confirmed that the POFMA challenge that SDP laid out to MOM will be heard in the High Court on the 16th January. Unfortunately, the proceedings will only take place in the Chambers instead of the open court. This means that the media and the public will not have the chance to attend and listen on to the proceedings

However, the Facebook post indicated that the SDP will challenge this too, as they apply to have the judge “to have the case heard in open court”. SDP stated that this will be the first thing they will do when the Court session is convened on Thursday morning. This, SDP indicated, will allow the matter to be open to the public, seeing as how the case has escalated to such an extent that it has drawn widespread and intense public interest.

SDP further justified their reasoning for the case to be made public, as not only has the POFMA law been strongly criticised by the opposition, civil society and the general public as an unfair weapon of the ruling party, but the issue of foreign PMETs flooding Singapore is also a controversial policy that has gripped the attention of Singaporeans. Thus, given that these two issues will be hotly debated and decided by Singaporeans in the looming GE, the SDP will appeal to the judge to make the hearing open to the public.

The public awaits the scheduled Thursday High Courts session in anticipation.
