Pritam Singh Asked PAP For Breakdown Of New Jobs For SGreans And PR, Chan Chun Sing Flat Out Refuse To Answer

The question that has been on the minds of Singaporeans for over a decade got a special airing in Parliament on Monday, when WP MP Pritam Singh requested in Parliament for a breakdown of the number of new jobs that went to Singaporeans, permanent residents (PRs) and foreigners. While Minister of State for Manpower, Zaqy Mohamad provided a blanket figure for the numbers, this did not tackle the question put forth.

Pritam Singh had tabled a parliamentary question asking for the number of jobs created in each of the sectors covered under the Government’s Industry Transformation Maps and broken down according to the three groups. He then reiterated in Parliament that in order to remove any doubts among Singaporeans, and for conversations to be more fact-based, especially if data comes from the government itself, the figures given should be more specific and covers different sectors, rather than a blanket figure that MOM likes to wield out.

This however, drew a sharp rebuke from Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing, who proceeded to give a speech that lasted for half an hour, outlining the government’s strategies for growing Singapore’s economy and creating jobs. While the speech was possibly already prepared in advance, he still failed to answer Pritam’s questions. Instead, Chan began to challenge WP, in stating that while the Government can provide such numbers, he indicated that this will be pointless. Chan then insinuated that the questions posed was more of a tactic to pose the question of Singaporeans versus PR, and accused those with this agenda of trying to do more harm than good to Singapore.

This is clearly yet another diversion tactic used so well by the governing party. If they can provide the numbers, like Chan said they could, then why withhold and make things worse by having Singaporeans guessing? Why not dish out the numbers and put the debate to bed once and for all? They can do that, but they won’t. So, are the Whites hiding something from Singaporeans, something that would not look too good on them?
