Singaporeans have already seen POFMA used on a few occasions these past few weeks, as the Government goes all out to show they mean business, and to present any dissenting, anti-government voices early Christmas presents. of course, all the POFMA thrown to these online voices are all commentaries that goes against the government.
But it does make one wonder, can POFMA be used on government bodies that had done so much to mislead Singaporeans? Which government body misled Singaporeans, you may ask? Maybe the question should be, who have not? But to put things in perspective, here is HDB in promising Singaporeans a cash cow with their so called HDB flats as assets.
In March 2011, Lee Kuan Yew said: “85% of Singaporeans are living in HDB flats and we intend to keep the values of these homes up. It will never go down!… As Singapore prospers, the GDP goes-up, the value of homes will go up.”
In 2010, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said, “The HDB flat is not just a shelter but also a key investment asset…over the long term, the value of HDB flats depends on the strength of the Singapore economy. Provided Singapore continues to do well, our flats will maintain their value, and Singaporeans can enjoy an appreciating asset.”
And finally, in 2011, then National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan told Singaporeans: “We’re proud of the asset enhancement policy. (It) has given almost all Singaporeans a home of their own … that grows in value over time.”
We all know now that HDB flats will not continue to appreciate in value. In fact, the older HDB flats situated in mature estates are facing the real prospect of a massive depreciating value for their flats. Current Ministers themselves have said that HDB flats should not be used as one’s retirement asset. So how? Can POFMA be used on them?
Or is POFMA office exclusively reserved for critiques of the government? Those holding positions in government have a free hand to run rampant on propaganda?
