PM Lee Says Substance And Merits Trumps Connections, But Failed To Explain Presence Of Paper Generals

PM Lee finally opens up to the age old question Singaporeans have since forever – will having connections help one get ahead in life? As most Singaporeans know, the answer is a resounding YES. But PM Lee said that while having connections will help open doors, having substance and merit is more important.

This was revealed in a Q&A with students from the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) last Wednesday evening. PM Lee further emphasised his statement by indicating that if someone were to join the Government, it does not matter who that someone is connected to. That person will be judged on their own merits and substance in their quality of work. PM Lee also said that someone who thinks they can get away by having connections will be found out immediately, as Singapore is a small place, and everyone knows if that person has substance or not.

No news on whether PM Lee addressed his audience on the many paper generals who was tasked by the government to helm government related bodies, such as SMRT, NOL and ST, and why they failed but still get the high post. Or nothing on why so many partners of Ministers are also holding good posts in Government. Connections? Or they really are made of substance and merit?
