Shanmugam: No Ban On Things Just Because People Find Them Offensive

Law and Home Affairs Minister is at it again, this time saying that many people in Singapore may find things very offensive, but the Government will not ban all of those things that people find offensive. He neglected to mention that the Death Metal group Watain got banned precisely because some people started to find the group offensive on the day of the band’s performance itself.

he said this in response to the viral photo of a memo of songs that are deemed offensive because of the language and lyrics used. He claimed that the photo if taken out of context from his speech will make people misunderstand. He reiterated that the songs were just examples of what people may find offensive, but was clear in his stand that the government will not ban these songs just because some people find them offensive.

However, Shanmugam did not touch on the subject of the late banning of the group Watain, which was most likely kickstarted by a group of people aggressively starting a petition to get the group banned, as they peddle offensive and disturbing songs.
