WOMAN CLAIMS SHE’S FORCED TO GIVE UP SG CITIZENSHIP AFTER LIVING IN NZ FOR 20 YRS

Dear Editor,

As I watched with dismay and mockery the fixed Presidential selection of 2017 in NZ TVs, I received another rude shock in the form of my mum’s call, saying I’ve received notification from immigration threatening to strip my Singapore Citizen as I’d supposedly “acquired” New Zealand Citizenship.

I wish to state that I DID NOT do so but was conferred to me as I married my Lesbian partner and have lived in NZ for 2 decades, raising 2 kids who’re all grown up! I did not want to renounce my Singapore Citizen as it’s my birthright but chose to live in NZ cos Singapore is not condusive to raising children in a same-sex relationship or any children for that matter!

I understand that current moves to strip or bar overseas Singaporeans from their citizenship is due to our votes making a difference in key “battlegrounds” and the government is also moving towards a more fundamentalist line. It’s really not fair in this instance as a recent ISA detainee in Singapore also had both Australian and Singapore citizen but did not receive a similar threat from ICA.

I hope the “Community Action Network” can take note of these violations and possibly bring it up to the international court of justice. By not sharing privileged info to third parties, NZ can do well to protect the anonymity of
its citizens!
