WHEN IS PUBLICLY PUNISHING A CHILD OK IN S’PORE, OR IS IT CHILD ABUSE?

A Caucasian netizen had this heartfelt question for Singaporeans after witnessing a distressing sight to him in public today.

“I’m from Texas so I can understand a child who is acting up getting a small spanking, but today I saw something and wasn’t sure what to do so I sadly ended up just walking away.

I was at one of the shopping centers and I heard a girl crying, she was in school uniform and looked maybe 9 and her mother (i assume) was with her. Once she started to cry the mom turned around and slapped the shit out of her. It was only one strike, but it was across the face and she reached all the way back like she was going to pitch a fast ball. It left a handprint on her face and she started to cry some more.

The mom ended up dragging her out of the shopping center to the MRT, but no one said anything or did anything. Would it be wrong to step in or tell an authority figure? It just seemed a bit excessive.

Any advice? I don’t want to overstep my boundaries and end up getting in trouble or something.”
