High Court judge Justice Aedit Abdullah has slammed online keyboard warriors for making “disrespectful” and “very, very unhelpful” comments about a rape victim while taking advantage of the anonymity the Internet affords them.
He is referring to a case where bunker surveyor Ong Soon Heng was found guilty in July of abducting and raping an unconscious 22 year-old student who had been interning at his company. The pair were partying with friends at Zouk on 24 July 2014 and Ong had offered to take the victim home when she passed out. However, he took her to his home at Hume Heights and raped her while she was too intoxicated to defend herself.
He later claimed that he had been having an affair with the victim, who has a boyfriend, to deny all charges of rape.
The case attracted many comments online, some of which blamed the victim for what happened.
Justice Aedit says that cruel comments may prevent other victims from coming forward in future. He added that it was “not helpful to pass comments on the accused”.
