Just over two years ago on the campaign trail, we were asked by residents during a condo visit about our views and position on the elected presidency. This has obviously come to the forefront of everyone’s minds with the latest round of changes to the constitution, which some, including the WP, have questioned and opposed.
The office of the president is one that should be held with dignity, rise above politics, and be a unifying figure. Looking at and listening to comments over the last day or so, it is worrying to hear how upset people are and how far away we appear to be from our hopes for the position.
What have you and your friends been saying about this? Is this something that Singaporeans will come to accept given the passage of time? What does it say about the system and our society, our views of what public service entails, that so few good men and/or women are willing to put themselves forward?
