LOCAL DRAMA COMPANY: NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL STEAL OUR SHOW & DISCRIMINATE ALTERNATIVE FAMILIES

Local arts production organization Drama Box has taken the National Youth Council to task for allegedly staging a copycat event that emulated their own production, THE LESSON.

According to the Artistic Director of Drama Box, Kok Heng Leun, who is also a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) representing the arts, the NYC's staging on 4 September of a public engagement programme with a similar structure and style as Drama Box's THE LESSON as an appropriation of their intellectual property.

In a strongly worded letter rejecting a subsequent apology to Drama Box offered by NYC's CEO, David Chua, Kok explained that he also took issue with the framing of the NYC's engagement programme. NYC had allegedly positioned their programme in such a way that Kok felt was discriminatory against alternative families that do not fit into the normal heterosexual couple plus children norm.
