Singapore’s sprint queen, Shanti Pereira failed to retain her 200m crown at the KL SEA Games. She instead, clinched the bronze medal, in a time of 23.68 seconds at Bukit Jalil National Stadium last night. The time was her season best, yet, she was inconsolable in the hour immediately after the race.
her coaches were seen trying to console her, as Vietnam’s Le Tu Chinh, who won the 100m final the previous day, accomplished the sprint double by taking home the gold in 23.32sec, and home favourite Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli was second in 23.64sec.
Shanti’s coach believed that it was Shantis pursuit of perfection and her self-inflicted pressure of seeking a successful title defence that eventually got to Shanti. Her effort was also not helped by the saga in the months leading up to the Kuala Lumpur Games, where she had also been caught in the middle of a disagreement between Singapore Athletics and its local coaches.
To Shanti, well done, no matter what the colour of the medal you won is. And to the Singapore Athletics and their dispute with the coaches, congratulations, for it is your greed that ultimately affected Singapore’s athletes’ performances.
