Following the detention of the 2 Singaporean men in Abu Dhabi, UAE, for allegedly “crossdressing” and “behaving indecently”, Singaporean netizens have turned up in force on social media to demand that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan work out a way to bring the 2 Singaporeans home.
The duo had been jailed for a year in the country following their conviction in a UAE court.
Shortly after news broke of the arrests, prominent social media influencer Munah Hirzi tweeted MFA’s and Vivian Balakrishnan’s twitter handles while calling on other netizens to do the same until the Ministry works out a solution.
Munah Hirzi also recalled a tweet made before General Elections 2015 where the PAP twitter account, @PAPSingapore had allegedly made promises to build a more inclusive society, which many netizens took to mean inclusive of LGBTs.
Several other netizens also reacted angrily to the arrest, with some of them calling on the MFA to extract the Singaporeans from a “homophobic country”.
