A netizen shared this incident which happened to her taxi driver father, who picked up a fare cheat from Holland Village to Bukit Panjang only to get cheated by the dishonest passenger.
According to the netizen, the young man had boarded her father’s taxi at Holland Village bound for Bukit Panjang. While in the taxi, the young man chatted with the taxi driver and described himself as a 19 year-old ITE College West student.
Upon reaching their destination, the young man told the taxi driver that he did not have any money or cards on him to make payment. The total fare by then had come up to $15.
When asked to get money from one of his family members, the student reluctantly went up to check before coming down again to tell the driver that no one in his family had any money to pay him the fare.
To be kind to the student, the taxi driver simply asked for the student’s handphone number instead of calling for the police. He offered to SMS the student his bank account number so that the student could transfer him the fare.
When the taxi driver tried to contact the student later, he realized that he had been lied to as calls to the number could not get through to the dishonest student, and no transfer was made even after 2 days.
Taxi fare evaders may face fines of up to $200 and $400 if caught.
