PAP MP and current Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob has finally stopped her dance and announced her run for the Elected Presidency. She announced this at a National Day Dinner for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.
She said: “I recognise that the position of the elected President has the tremendous capacity to do good for all Singaporeans and for Singapore. Hence, I wish to inform you that I will be contesting in the coming Presidential Election.”
Halimah Yacob will resign from her roles as Speaker and PAP MP on Monday. After her resignation, she has asked Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to send an adviser to fill the gap she leaves. A by-election due to her absence is not expected to be called.
She said the reason why she took so long to announce her long anticipated run for Presidency was due to its heavy responsibility and had to be carefully considered.
