China’s plan to offer 100,000 pesos, or the equivalent of SGD 2,700 has been put on hold it seems, after Philippines Labour undersecretary Dominador Say issued a hasty statement to clarify that the salary figures quoted by Philippines media were “incorrect”.
According to the South China Morning Post, Say confirmed that a representative from the Chinese government would visit in July to discuss a “preliminary idea” to allow Filipinos to work as domestic helpers in China, he could not specify for sure how much Filipinos would be paid under the scheme.
Netizens have expressed skepticism and amusement when the news of the unrealistically high salaries first broke in the news. Singaporeans, as well as netizens from China and even Hong Kong had commented that such rates were unheard of for domestic helpers.
Up to 200,000 Filipinos are already working illegally as domestic workers in China. Say has made it one of his goals to allow Filipino domestic workers to have legal rights to work in China.
