6 SINGAPOREANS KILL THEMSELVES EVERY MONTH, 20% UP FROM 2015

429 Singaporeans committed suicide last year, according to a report by Samaritans of Singapore (SOS), with 77 of the victims coming from young adults between 20 and 29 years old.

This is an increase of 20% since 2015, and works out to be about 6 deaths per month.

The group most affected by suicides comes from those aged 50 and above. They accounted for 46% of all suicides, or 197 of the total figure last year.

SOS explains that the men in this group are particularly vulnerable due to their experience of significant life changes, such as retrenchment, financial issues and retirement. These men are also among the least likely to seek help.

Anyone who needs help is advised to call the 24-hour SOS hotline 1800-221 4444.
