5 residents broke down the metal doors to a Housing & Development Board (HDB) flat at Block 4, Haig Road last Saturday to save 2 children who were trapped at home when a fire broke out in their unit.
The fire had started in the 11th floor unit at around 7PM. A 64 year-old resident, who was among the 5 who helped to break down the door to the affected unit, said that his wife and grandson were downstairs when they noticed smoke pouring out of the flat unit.
HIs wife returned to call on him, his daughter and his son-in-law, who all dashed out to help.
A male neighbor also joined them and helped to tug at the locks until the door gave way.
A boy was rescued from the unit, but they could not get to the boy’s younger sister who was trapped in one of the rooms due to the intensity of the flames.
The resident recounted: “The boy told us that his younger sister was in one of the rooms. The fire got bigger and it was getting smokier by the second. There was nothing we could do.”
Fortunately, the mother of children had already been informed and she rushed into the unit to rescue her daughter in spite of the danger.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that it had received reports of a fire and had dispatched emergency responders. One woman was conveyed conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and two children to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
It is understood that the victims are a 35-year-old woman, her son, 5, and daughter, 4.
The conditions of the three have stabilised. The mother has expressed her thanks to her neighbors for rescuing her children, as they were locked in without the keys to the gates.
