Dear A.S.S. Editor
News reports today stated that some 59 people have been arrested or misusing boarding passes since June this year. If that is true, i a space of just one and a half months, 59 people have actually bought an air ticket to get the boarding pass, without ever having the intention of leaving Singapore!
it is not clear why the report does not include numbers of people who have been caught for misusing their boarding passes since the beginning of the year. Police, have however, reminded passengers that transit areas of Changi Airport are gazetted as protected places. This means those who enter the transit area with a boarding pass should be there for the purpose of travelling to their next destination, and nothing else.
Among reasons for those caught misusing their boarding passes were to see a friend off, to meet Korean pop idols, to see a relative off and to make fraudulent GST claims. Those who misuse their boarding pass to enter transit areas, with no intention of proceeding to their next destinations, can be prosecuted in court. If convicted, they can can be jailed for two years and/or fined $1,000.
