IS LEARNING TO SWIM A PERSONAL OR GOVT RESPONSIBILITY?

Dear All Singapore Stuff Editor,

The body of a man was found in the waters off Bedok Jetty on Friday after he drowned. The police said that it was alerted to a case of unnatural death at 5.40pm. A man was found motionless in the water and was subsequently pronounced dead by paramedics at scene. Police investigations are ongoing.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said that more needs to be done to ensure young people know how to swim and have the skills to survive in open water after a 12-year-old schoolboy was also found in the waters near Bedok Jetty in May after he drowned.

This makes one wonder if the Singapore government is pushing the blame to their citizens for not knowing how to swim instead of checking if there is enough safety features being enforced at the Bedok Jetty.
