In one speech, Mr Low Thia Khiang exemplified the kind of statesman-like values that Singapore needed.
Placing national interests above any personal or individual party agenda, he rose above the squabbles, gently and sternly reminded those in power of their duties to the people and to be cautious of not sacrificing the many governing principles that made Singapore exceptional in the first place.
It was a class act of chiding, and of the responsible and constructive politics that the Workers’ Party has come to represent under his leadership. He did not need to be loud and aggressive to send his points across the aisle. It was heard loud and clear.
He was Prime Ministerial today. He was that adult in the room. He was the Prime Minister in Parliament today.
