Generally agree with this
“My personal view remains that Mr Lee’s wish to demolish 38 Oxley Rd should be granted the moment you are no longer living in it, which may be 20, 30 or more years in the future. I am as baffled as most Singaporeans why Hsien Yang and you wish to consume all of us in your personal family matters.” (Janadas Devan)
Indeed why? Lee Wei Ling is a spoilt brat – yeah maybe. She lives in a cocoon shielded from the harsh reality of the house that her father built – the house that is the Singapore system not 38OR. Yes to that too. But why she is so consumed with this?
The rest of us mere mortals have to content with life’s uncertainties, faced with risks to well being, financial status, personal and familial stability and unbeknownst as to how we are judged by posterity. The vast majority take these in our stride as lives or fates we had to live with. But the doctor neither face nor had to contend with much of such things.
Not knowing if her brother, the PM, using the machinery of the state or not, renege on her father’s desire to demolish 38OR must have given her the sort of uncertainties that she seldom had to face. What’s gonna happened to dear papa’s house after she is gone. It must have gnawed in her mind and she had another what 20 or more years to go? Same with brother Yang – what is posterity gonna say about him if he did not defend his daddy’s wishes.
Same to with brother Loong – how is posterity gonna judge him as a filial son and prime minister, both roles seems to be mutually exclusive in this affair. These go round and round in the head, affecting emotions, for years to come to a bunch who had their lives mapped for them. Hence the affair is like a psychodrama with all sides wanting it resolved now, not in 20, 30 years and on their own terms to assuage their own particular psychological uncertainties and needs.
I think all 3 behaved abominably – Wei Ling and Hsien Yang trying to rope in the public, Hsien Loong using the political set-up where only his side of the story gets to be assessed by people of his own choosing. Yet both audiences were usually treated as an afterthought in normal times and now are being asked for support and understanding.
Meritocracy or Aristocracy someone asked? That’s not even worth making a choice, the former isn’t what is all what it is made out to be, the latter is an anachronism.
