BEDOK MURDEROUS MAID WOULD NOT HAVE ESCAPED IF MOM GAVE EMPLOYER RIGHTS TO DETAIN PASSPORT

The maid, the suspect in the recent double murder of an elderly couple in Bedok, managed to leave Singapore because she had access to her passport and work permit. It is a requirement under Singapore law that the foreign domestic worker be in possession of her passport and work permit.

Will the Manpower Ministry review its policy after this unfortunate incident?

Employers are required to be responsible for their foreign domestic worker’s maintenance and safety, and yet the law dictates that the documents must be in their possession, which would allow them to freely travel to Malaysia, Batam or other places on the days that they are off.

Worse, they can just pack up and leave the country, like the maid in the Bedok case. The hands of employers are tied because of the law’s lack of employer protection. It is timely to review the policy and give employers more support.
