This place was more crowded than some shopping malls on a sunday and yet the government wants to tear this place down. If for the sake of progress we have to give up that space, so be it but at the very least open up another free hawking zone somewhere else.
The young have their own flea market culture and both the young and old can benefit from having a free hawking zone. Why is there a ministerial committee for LKY Oxley house which really does not affect singaporeans if it were to be torn down just like what LKY wished for in his will, while we get silenced from the government despite efforts from Save Sungei Road Market.
Because the difference between the oxley house and sungei road is that doing away with sungei road will displace and affect the livelihood of many old singaoreans. While activist try to explore options for sungei road the government proposes options for the Oxley house, it is troubling to see the government put so much effort in preserving something singaporeans don’t care about and ignoring the pleas of singaporeans trying to save sungei road.
