I refer to the article, NTU: REMOVAL OF CHINESE WORDS A MISUNDERSTANDING, MUST CATER FOR NON-ENGLISH SPEAKERS TOO.
The issue is entirely not out of character of the NTU staff as mentioned in the Chinese papers a director named “Diana”.
When I was working as a part time staff in cafe in NTU, she was already notorious in bullying operators to kow-tow to her will.
Once she accused my boss of violating SCDF safety rules by not keeping to the 1.5m width for fire escape route. She send her subordinates to harass my boss and issued warning letters for non-compliance of SCDF safety rules including blocking the passage with potted plants.
But when their staff came to measure the passage way, it was well above the compliance rule of 1.5m. The passage measured 1.8m from the widest point of the passage to 1.5m ar the narrowest. And the potted plants were property of NTU, placed that by NTU office to beautify the passage way as they believed their NTU president would often use that passage way, for the pleasure of the president.
Out to save face she ban my boss for having alfresco sitting area restricted and reduced as a means to “comply” with SCDF safety rules. Removed all the potted plants. With no apology offered to her accusations.
Why a good professor came to the rescue of such rogue character is anyone guess.
