By defying his late father’s wish to have his house demolished and twisting his words, Lee Hsien Loong is betraying the very important value of filial piety in Asian society.
And ironically, filial piety is central to Confucianism which his late father tried to use as a cloak to legitimise his authoritarian rule.
His act of defying LKY’s wish hence will have the effect of diminishing respect many older folks have for him.
It is hence not surprising that when exposed by his siblings, the dishonorable son quickly claimed that a Ministerial Committee had been set up and that he had recused himself from all decisions on LKY’s house.
In this way, the politician who has much mileage to extract from having his father’s house retained can claim that the Ministers had decided not to demolish the house when this is his decision from the get-go.
