Dr Lee Wei Ling, the younger sister of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, posted on Facebook yesterday to express her sadness over the alleged changes in her former friend, the Minister for Home Affairs and Law, K Shanmugam, after he declined to take her side in the Lee Family feud.

According to Dr Lee, Mr Shanmugam was once a very good friend to her and both of them had helped each other a great deal.

However, after Dr Lee became embroiled in a dispute with her eldest brother Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his younger brother, Lee Hsien Yang, over the proposed demolition of 38 Oxley Road, a house that was the family home of the Dr Lee’s late father and former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, she has become aghast at the way that Mr Shanmugam has “changed”.

Dr Lee’s concern over Mr Shanmugam’s role in the saga appears to be over a perceived conflict of interest with Mr Shanmugam when he sits in on a Cabinet committee that was set up to determine whether the house at 38 Oxley Road should be demolished. Dr Lee and her brother have objected to Mr Shanmugam’s sitting on the committee, citing the fact that he advised their late father and Dr Lee on the demolition clause as a potential conflict of interest.

Writing in a post on Facebook, Mr Lee Hsien Yang revealed that he and his sister, Dr Lee, had written of their objections to the cabinet committee, only to be brushed off by another minister presiding on the committee, Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong.

In response, Mr Shanmugam has rejected their complaints, and challenged Mr Lee Hsien Yang to issue a lawyer’s demand for his response if there is any genuine fear that his role in the committee is a conflict of interest.
