Apart from the late Lee Kuan Yew, the other thing that’s dead in this entire kerfuffle is irony:
1. The siblings, in openly attacking their brother, claim to be protecting their father’s legacy against Lee Hsien Loong’s authoritarian ways, with apparently zero awareness that the system they now fear actually is their father’s legacy.
2. This entire thing is blowing up on Facebook of all places because the two younger Lees don’t trust the mainstream media since they are seen as being under the government’s thumb – precisely the situation their papa manufactured with the Newspaper and Printing Presses Act and other legislation and restrictions.
3. Apart from not wanting his home to be turned into a monument, Lee Kuan Yew also valued his privacy and said that he and his wife didn’t like the idea of strangers traipsing around their home. In fighting over whether to honour this wish his kids have brought about this situation where tons of strangers are now agog at all sorts of personal family drama, even reading emails he exchanged with his daughter-in-law!
