SDP THROWS WEIGHT BEHIND SUNGEI RD FLEA MARKET VENDORS, WANTS PAP TO RETHINK CLOSURE DECISION

The SDP will visit the Sungei Road flea market at 3 pm tomorrow (10 June, Saturday), to listen to and talk with the vendors there. The PAP government has given notice that the vendors will have to stop its operations and clear out by 10 July 2017.

The market has a rich 80-year old history. It has become an iconic venue in Singapore, and removing one of our country’s last remaining heritage sites would be a tragedy.

Equally important is that many of the vendors there are the elderly poor who survive by selling used goods and antiques. They have been doing this all their lives and have nowhere else to go if evicted.

The SDP supports the vendors’ calls for the PAP to rethink its decision to close the market.
