Bank of Singapore chief executive officer Bahren Shaari, 54, has not ruled out running for president, he said in response to queries from the media. However, he emphasized that he is currently focused on his job.
Mr Bahren said: “I’m humbled to have my name mentioned as a potential candidate … It is always a privilege and honour to serve the nation.”
Other names that have emerged as potential presidential candidates are PAP appointment holders Halimah Yacob, Yaacob Ibrahim, Masagos Zulkifli, former Cabinet minister Abdullah Tarmugi, former Senior Minister of State Zainul Abidin Rasheed, and former Deloitte & Touche managing partner Po’ad Shaik Abu Bakar Mattar.
However, Mr Mattar has been named as a member of the Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) which will determine the eligibility of presidential hopefuls. He thus cannot participate in this election.
Experts interviewed say that there is a low likelihood of a contest this election. Part of the reason lies in the smaller pool of eligible candidates in a reserved election. Many of the names that have been touted as potential candidates are also from the Establishment, says Singapore Management University law professor Eugene Tan, which reduces the likelihood that these individuals would try to get into contest with each other.
